Butterfly Pavilion's Bee Fencing Project

  • Reducing human-elephant conflict and building sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

  • Bee fencing involves suspending bee hives from posts connected with a trip wire, which surround an area humans wish to protect, such as farmland. When an elephant approaches the area and encounters the trip wire, it will disturb the hive and guard bees will fly out and sting the elephant. Over time, elephants expect that they will be stung and avoid bee-fenced areas.

  • Bee fences are affordable, can be managed by farmers themselves, involve locally-available materials and can be adapted to local conditions. In addition, the bees also pollinate plants in the local area, contributing to a thriving ecosystem, and provide products (honey, wax, and pollen) for sale or local consumption. Maintaining hives thus represents an opportunity for local livelihood enhancement.

Denver Zoo Field Conservation’s Rocky Mountain/Great Plains Program

  • DZ mobilizes citizens from across Colorado and New Mexico to save wildlife and wild places.

  • We train outdoor enthusiasts to help understand and address threats to alpine ecosystems and species like pika, lynx, and bear.

  • We inspire the next generation of conservationists by getting students involved in grassland research and restoration using bison and dung beetles.

  • We’re also helping land managers and Native American tribes safeguard their way of life—and native species—through sustainable practices.
    Funds raised go to:
    - Hands-on STEM projects for under-served students
    - Front Range citizen science engagement

Owl's Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife (nominated by Downtown Aquarium members)

  • Reducing human impact on Florida's native wildlife through rehabilitation, education, and teamwork.

  • Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife is a completely volunteer run non-profit organization that is state and federally permitted to rescue, rehabilitate and release sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife.

  • This organization holds a special place in the hearts of Downtown Aquarium staff because this organization is responsible for bringing "Olive" - the cutest ambassador North American river otter - to Denver.
